Attacked opposition leader hospitalized following surgery

The seat for Lee Jae-myung, leader of the main opposition Democratic Party, remains vacant during a meeting of the party's Supreme Council at the National Assembly in Seoul on Jan. 3, 2024, as Lee had emergency surgery at Seoul National University Hospital the previous day after being stabbed in the neck by a man in his 60s during a visit to the southeastern port city of Busan.
