SEOUL, June 30 (Yonhap) -- The power K-pop holds within the global world has been recognized after albums from four different Korean idol groups were listed on Billboard's main album chart, Billboard 200, this week.
K-pop juggernauts BTS' fourth full-length album "Map of the Soul: 7"
and fifth studio album "BE" ranked No. 102 and 141 respectively on
the music chart, according to the U.S. music publisher on Tuesday (KST). The
two albums were also included in the Billboard 200 for a total of 70 and 31
weeks.
Boy band TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT), who are under the same K-pop powerhouse behind BTS, also succeeded in landing at No.82 on the Billboard 200 chart during the third week of its second full-length album "The Chaos Chapter: Freeze" release.
TXT released "The Chaos Chapter:
Freeze" on May 31 and saw it enter fifth place on the Billboard main
albums chart in the first week of its release, the highest ranking for TXT to
achieve since their debut. The studio album also ranked No.34 in the second
week of its release, maintaining the top spot.
Another K-pop act that has made it to the main albums chart is Seventeen. The
13-piece act came in at No.15 with its eighth mini-album "Your
Choice."
This was the first time in six years for SEVENTEEN to have been listed on the
Billboard 200 since their debut in 2015. The group has recently made a series
of appearances on famous U.S. talk shows, which helped boost the band's
presence within the global music industry.
In terms of Korean girl groups, TWICE's latest EP album "Taste of
Love" ranked No.60 and kept its spot on the Billboard 200 chart for two
weeks.
The album initially debuted at sixth place on the main album chart last week,
making it the second highest rank to be achieved by a K-pop girl group in
history.
Although several albums of BTS have been on the Billboard 200, it is a rare
sight to see four different K-pop groups to be listed on the chart all at once.
In particular, TXT and TWICE soar to the top ranks within the charts during the
first week of the groups' album release as opposed to their previous works.
The fact that the albums were not "charted out" during the second and
third weeks of the album's release, shows that K-pop bands have become stronger
than before.
Along with Billboard 200, the main singles chart Hot 100 chart is considered to
be one of Billboard's two main charts, and the size and loyalty of the fandom
are known to affect the performance.
Earlier, TXT, TWICE, and SEVENTEEN topped the Billboard "Top Album
Sales" chart, which ranks the albums based on sales, for the past three
weeks in a row.
