SEOUL, July 20 (Yonhap) -- A U.S.-educated aerospace engineering professor has been named the new chairperson of the Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board, officials said Monday.
Professor Choi Kee-young of Inha University will lead the 11-member board for three years.
Choi, a Seoul National University graduate, earned his doctoral degree in aerospace engineering from Stanford University.
Three non-standing members of the board have also been newly appointed, along with Choi, as of last Friday, the officials said.
After his appointment, Choi was quoted as saying that he will try to swiftly carry out the investigation into the 2024 Jeju Air plane crash, strengthen the independence and fairness of investigations, and improve the credibility of the aviation and railway accident investigation system.
