DAPA chief discusses arms cooperation with Peru's congressional delegation

SEOUL, Jan. 16 (Yonhap) -- The chief of South Korea's arms procurement agency has met with Peru's congressional delegation and discussed ways to strengthen bilateral arms cooperation, officials said Friday.

Lee Yong-cheol, minister of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, met with Peruvian lawmakers Victor Flores and Silvia Monteza at the agency's headquarters in Gwacheon, south of Seoul, on Thursday, according to the agency.

Peru is South Korea's largest export designation of defense equipment among Central and South American countries.

In 2024, South Korean defense firms, and Peru's Army and Navy clinched a long-term strategic partnership deal, which allows Korean companies to secure the status of preferred negotiators in joint defense projects for up to 15 years.

Notably, South Korea signed a framework agreement to export K2 tanks and K808 armored vehicles to Peru last year, and agreed to conclude the contract within this year. If realized, it would mark Seoul's largest exports of arms equipment to the region.
