S. Korea confirms additional FMD cases, total at 16

SEOUL, April 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korea reported two additional foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) cases at local pig farms, raising the number of cases this year to 16, the agriculture ministry said Friday.

The latest cases were found at two farms in the county of Muan, 288 kilometers south of Seoul, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Authorities are conducting disinfection operations and planning to cull pigs in the affected area as a preventive measure.

A 48-hour nationwide standstill order was also issued, effective through 3 p.m. Sunday, the ministry said.

FMD is an acute infectious viral disease that causes illness in cows, pigs, goats and other cloven-hoofed animals. It does not affect humans.
