SEOUL -- A tunnel construction site in Gwangmyeong, just south of Seoul, collapsed Friday, leaving two workers unreachable, authorities said.

The site had been evacuated earlier in the day after authorities were alerted to the risk of collapse following the discovery of cracks in multiple pillars used in the construction of the underground tunnels.

■ DP's Lee Jae-myung widens lead among presidential hopefuls: poll

SEOUL -- Lee Jae-myung, former leader of the liberal Democratic Party, has a strong lead among potential candidates for the June 3 presidential election, a survey showed Friday.

In the poll conducted by Gallup Korea on 1,005 adults between Tuesday and Thursday, Lee garnered 37 percent support, marking his highest rating this year.

SEOUL -- Prosecutors investigating bribery allegations involving former President Moon Jae-in have additionally booked his former son-in-law as a suspect, prosecution officials said Friday.

The Jeonju District Prosecutors Office recently booked Moon's 45-year-old ex-son-in-law, surnamed Seo, without detention on charges of accepting bribes, the officials said.

■ Train makes emergency stop in Paju after issue on tracks

PAJU, South Korea -- A train on the Gyeongui–Jungang Line made an emergency stop in Paju, just north of Seoul, on Friday after authorities discovered an issue on the tracks.

The train was headed to Seoul from Munsan when it was brought to a sudden halt at 3:30 p.m., according to an official at state railway operator KORAIL.

■ Veterans minister to leave for Washington this week to meet Korean War veterans

SEOUL -- Veterans Minister Kang Jung-ai will depart for Washington, D.C., this week to meet with U.S. veterans who fought in the 1950-53 Korean War as Seoul marks the 75th anniversary of the conflict's outbreak this year, her ministry said Friday.

During her three-day trip from Saturday through Monday, Kang will first visit the Armed Forces Retirement Home in the U.S. capital, where 43 Korean War veterans currently reside, and express her gratitude for their service on the battlefield, according to the ministry.
