Navy's 4,400-ton destroyer to participate in fleet review, joint drills in India next month

SEOUL, Jan. 30 (Yonhap) -- The Navy will send a 4,400-ton destroyer to participate in an international fleet review and a multilateral naval exercise in India next month, officials said Friday.

The ROKS Gang Gam-chan departed from a naval base on the southern island of Jeju earlier Friday en route to India, where the fleet review is scheduled for Feb. 17-19 in the eastern coastal city of Visakhapatnam.

Warships from around 20 countries will take part in the naval review aimed at enhancing maritime security cooperation, including the United States, Britain, Japan and Australia.

The destroyer will subsequently join Exercise Milan, slated for Feb. 19-25 in nearby waters, designed to enhance its interoperability with multilateral forces.

During the exercise, the vessel will engage in various maritime drills, such as anti-ship and anti-aircraft strikes, logistics support, helicopter deck landing drills and tactical maneuvers.

This year marks the second time the South Korean Navy will join the biennial drills in India, following a 2,500-ton frigate's participation in the 2022 exercise.
