SEOUL, Aug. 12 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Jae Myung was set to attend a meeting Wednesday to explore ways to nurture advanced future industries, including small modular reactors (SMRs), nuclear fusion and aerospace, that he says will be key economic drivers and support the country's artificial intelligence (AI) transformation.

The meeting, to be held later Wednesday at Cheong Wa Dae, will bring together around 60 government officials, researchers and other experts to discuss ways to foster seven future industries as new growth engines, the presidential office said.

The office categorized SMRs, nuclear fusion, renewable energy, quantum technology, aerospace, advanced biology and supply chains for advanced materials and components as seven key "seeds" for innovation and assets for the future economy and national security.

"Today's event has been organized to jointly seek ways to successfully support the AI transformation, and to secure and foster advanced technologies, such as SMRs, quantum and space-aerospace, for a great future leap together with experts and business leaders," it said.

Wednesday's meeting will also discuss ways to nurture talent in the science and engineering fields and innovation in the research ecosystem in order to strengthen the country's fundamentals in science and technology, the office added.
