PM set to visit U.S., Switzerland to promote S. Korea's bid to host U.N. hub

SEOUL, March 12 (Yonhap) -- Prime Minister Kim Min-seok is set to depart Thursday for the United States and Switzerland to promote South Korea's bid to host a U.N. hub for projects related to artificial intelligence (AI), his office said.

The tentatively named "U.N. AI hub" is a South Korean government initiative aimed at bringing together U.N. bodies, and South Korea's private and public sectors to produce AI-based solutions to global issues.

Kim plans to visit Washington, New York and Geneva through March 19 and meet with heads of organizations, including U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, to discuss the plan.

The organizations he will visit include the U.N., UNICEF and the United Nations Development Program in New York, as well as the World Health Organization, the International Labor Organization and the International Organization for Migration in Geneva.

The prime minister was this week named head of the U.N. AI hub bid committee.

This will mark his second visit to the U.S. in as many months. In January, he met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance in Washington.

His upcoming trip will also be used to meet senior U.S. officials, his office said, for talks likely to focus on tariffs and other pending issues between the two countries.
