Military deploys 320 choppers, 1,100 personnel to combat springtime wildfires

SEOUL, May 18 (Yonhap) -- The military has deployed 320 choppers and over 1,100 service members to combat wildfires in the springtime this year, the defense ministry said Monday.

A total of 320 firefighting helicopters, including CH-47F Chinook and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, were deployed on 103 occasions during the wildfire-prone period from Jan. 20 to May 15, according to the ministry.

For firefighting efforts, the military had readied 143 military choppers for immediate deployment during the period and dispatched a field-grade officer to the Korea Forest Service to coordinate with authorities in real time.
