Seoul's potential winning of Canada's submarine project to contribute to Canadian economy: FM Cho

SEOUL, Feb. 26 (Yonhap) -- Foreign Minister Cho Hyun has stressed South Korea's possible winning of Canada's major submarine procurement project will greatly contribute to Canada's economy during a meeting with his Canadian counterpart in Ottawa, Seoul's foreign ministry said Thursday.

Cho made the remarks during his talks with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Wednesday (local time) hours before a "two-plus-two" meeting of the two countries' defense and foreign ministers.

The bilateral talks came as South Korea is ramping up efforts to secure Canada's high-profile submarine project, valued at around 60 trillion won (US$41 billion), to supply up to 12 naval submarines. A South Korean consortium of Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. is vying with Germany's ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

"Minister Cho explained South Korean submarines' superior performance and Seoul's capabilities to deliver on time and highlighted if South Korea wins the project, it will greatly contribute to boosting the Canadian economy and creating jobs," the foreign ministry said.

In response, Anand said her country will adequately review Seoul's bid in accordance with necessary procedures, expressing her interest in areas of cooperation that Seoul could seek with Canada.

Cho and Anand also agreed to further strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations and Canada and shared the view about the need to update the action plan for the goal, according to the ministry.
