SEOUL, March 10 (Yonhap) -- The top U.S. diplomat for East Asia policy will pay his tribute this week at a memorial for U.S. soldiers who died while serving in South Korea following the armistice of the 1950-53 Korean War, officials said Tuesday.

Michael DeSombre, U.S. assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, plans to visit the War Memorial of Korea in central Seoul on Friday, as he will visit South Korea for a five-day trip starting Wednesday, according to the Korea-U.S. Alliance Foundation.

The memorial was set up at the War Memorial of Korea museum late last month to honor the 103 U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) soldiers who died while serving for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula following the Korean War.

DeSombre pledged to pay a floral tribute to the memorial in December last year, when the nonprofit foundation visited the U.S. Department of State.

During the visit to Seoul, DeSombre will meet with Seoul officials to discuss alliance and other issues, including North Korea.
