Gov't unveils logo commemorating renowned independence fighter Kim Koo

SEOUL, June 26 (Yonhap) -- The government unveiled a logo honoring renowned independence fighter Kim Koo on Friday after the U.N. culture agency, UNESCO, commemorated 2026 as the 150th anniversary of Kim's birth.

The logo, made in UNESCO's signature color blue, features a caricature of a bespectacled Kim along with a message, "My Wish, Culture of Peace," which symbolizes Kim's lifelong wish to build a prosperous nation rooted in a culture of peace, rather than seeking to dominate other nations through military or economic strength.

Kim (1876-1949) was a pivotal leader of the Korean independence movement during Japan's 1910-45 colonization of Korea. He spearheaded resistance against the colonial rule for over three decades, serving as the first president of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai during the struggle.

The logo, which has Korean and English versions, will be used for various events commemorating Kim, officials said.
