Police raid home of teenage assailant of ruling party lawmaker

SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Yonhap) -- Investigators have raided the home of the teenage suspect behind the physical attack on ruling party lawmaker Bae Hyun-jin as police are trying to determine the exact motive of the crime, officials said Monday.

During Sunday's search of the suspect's home in Seoul's Gangnam district, police seized his laptop, and an analysis is currently under way into his computer, as well as his mobile phone history, officials at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said.

The 15-year-old male middle school student was detained Thursday shortly after attacking Bae of the ruling People Power Party with a rock the size of an adult man's fist in Gangnam, southern Seoul.

Bae, a television news anchor-turned-lawmaker, was struck on the back of her head more than 15 times. She was discharged after being hospitalized for two days due to the bleeding wound she sustained in the attack.

The day after the attack, police put the suspect under emergency hospitalization, citing his age and health conditions, as he had been reportedly waiting to be admitted to a hospital for a depression relapse.

Police are expected to visit the suspect at the hospital for questioning after the emergency hospitalization period expires Tuesday, as they are trying to determine the exact motive behind his crime and trace his activities and the locations he visited before the assault.

A police official said it's too early to determine whether the suspect had any accomplice or his criminal motive at this stage, adding he will be questioned once or twice more in the future.

"We've questioned his parents about what he has done and what his general disposition was like," a police official said. "We plan to closely look into his phone communication records, CCTV footage and social networking service history."
