(3rd LD) Trump will make only 'good' Iran deal that satisfies his 'redlines': White House official

WASHINGTON, May 29 (Yonhap) -- U.S. President Donald Trump will only make a "good" deal with Iran that satisfies his "redlines," a White House official said Friday, shortly after he concluded a Situation Room meeting without announcing any decision.

The official made the remarks in response to a question from Yonhap News Agency, reiterating that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.

"The Situation Room meeting has concluded and lasted approximately two hours," the official said.

"President Trump will only make a deal that is good for America and satisfies his redlines. Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon."

On Thursday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent highlighted Trump's three "redline" demands that Iran commit not to pursue a nuclear weapon, turn over its stockpile of highly enriched uranium and reopen the crucial Strait of Hormuz.

Before the Situation Room meeting, Trump signaled his intention to make a "final determination" during the meeting, reiterating his calls for Iran to forgo any pursuit of a nuclear weapon and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, amid reports that Washington and Tehran are inching toward an agreement on a 60-day memorandum of understanding.

"Iran must agree that they will never have a nuclear weapon or bomb," he wrote on Truth Social. "The Strait of Hormuz must be immediately opened, with no tolls, for unrestricted shipping traffic in both directions."

He also said that all sea mines, if any, will be "terminated," noting that the U.S. military has removed numerous mines with its underwater mine sweepers and that Iran will complete the "immediate removal and/or detonation of any mines that are left, which will not be many."

"Ships caught in the Strait due to our amazing and unprecedented Naval Blockade, which will now be lifted, may start the process of 'heading home!' Say HELLO to your wives, husbands, parents, and families from me, your favorite President!" he said.

In addition, he said that Iran's enriched uranium, which has been buried underground after a U.S. B-2 bomber attack last June, will be unearthed by the United States -- in close coordination with Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency -- and be "destroyed."

He went on to say that "no money will be exchanged until further notice," as Iran has called on Washington to release its frozen assets and ease sanctions amid deepening economic hardships.
