(LEAD) No senior N. Korean officials attend banquet hosted by Chinese envoy in Pyongyang

SEOUL -- The Chinese Embassy in Pyongyang has hosted a banquet to mark the 63rd anniversary of the signing of a bilateral treaty, North Korea's state media reported Friday, amid North Korea's deepening ties with Russia.

Participants in Thursday's event included China's top envoy in Pyongyang, Wang Yajun, and Kim Sung-chan, the president of Kim Il-sung University, and other officials, the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said in a brief dispatch.

N. Korea slams Japan's additional release of treated radioactive water from Fukushima power plant

SEOUL -- North Korea on Wednesday denounced Japan's additional discharge of treated radioactive water from the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, saying that the world cannot help but face a "terrifying nuclear disaster."

In late June, Japan began releasing its seventh batch of treated radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean and is scheduled to do so through July 16, according to Japanese media reports. In August 2023, Japan started discharging such water, more than 12 years after three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima plant suffered a meltdown due to a powerful earthquake.

N. Korea holds grand memorial events on 30th death anniv. of national founder Kim Il-sung

SEOUL -- North Korea has held a national memorial service and concert, attended by its leader Kim Jong-un, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of national founder Kim Il-sung, state media reported Tuesday.

The memorial events on Monday appeared to be held at a similar level to those on the 20th and 25th anniversaries despite speculations that North Korea might scale them down to focus on the personality cult for the incumbent leader.

N. Korea's military education delegation leaves for Russia amid deepening ties

SEOUL -- A delegation of North Korea's military school has departed for Russia, state media said Tuesday, amid deepening military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow.

The Korean People's Army military education delegation led by Kim Kum-chol, president of Kim Il Sung Military University, left for Russia on Monday, the Korean Central News Agency said in a one-sentence dispatch.

SEOUL -- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited a mausoleum dedicated to his late grandfather, Kim Il-sung, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his death Monday, state media reported.

Kim paid tribute at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, where his father, Kim Jong-il, and grandfather, Kim Il-sung, are laid to rest, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

N. Korea extols Kim Jong-un's achievements on state founder's 30th death anniv.

SEOUL -- North Korea's state media highlighted the country's leader Kim Jong-un's major military achievements Monday, the 30th anniversary of the death of state founder Kim Il-sung, in a move seen aimed at intensifying the personality cult for the current leader.

There have been no media reports of Kim Jong-un visiting the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, where the embalmed bodies of the current leader's father, Kim Jong-il, and grandfather, Kim Il-sung, lie in state.
