Seoul mayor to travel to France, China to discuss climate change and economic exchanges
SEOUL, July 23 (Yonhap) -- Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon will visit Paris this week to discuss joint responses to climate change with fellow mayors before traveling to China to discuss ways to revitalize economic and cultural exchanges between the two countries, city officials said Tuesday.
On the first leg of the nine-day trip from Wednesday to Aug. 1, Oh will first attend the "climate action mayors' conference" in Paris on Thursday and present the achievements Seoul city has made in countering the climate crisis.
Oh is also expected to join a meeting of the C40 Cities Climate leadership group, in which Seoul serves as a vice-chair city, and introduce the city's policies aimed at managing energy consumption of buildings to reduce greenhouse gases.
While in Paris, Oh will also watch an Olympic women's handball match between South Korea and Germany. South Korea's national handball squad has members affiliated with the handball team that the Seoul city government runs.
After Paris, Oh will fly to China's western city of Chongqing to visit the building that housed Korea's provisional government during Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule and meet with descendants of independence activists to express gratitude.
On the second day in China, Oh plans to meet with Hu Henghua, the mayor of Chongqing, to discuss ways to boost exchanges in culture and tourism industries and seek expanded cooperation on economic and industrial fronts.
Oh will then travel to Beijing and hold talks with Beijing Mayor Yin Yong on Tuesday, which would mark the first high-level meeting between the two cities in six years.
In Beijing, Oh will also visit three sites of a promotion program, dubbed "Seoul's greatest pleasure in BEIJING," which the Seoul city government holds in Beijing to raise awareness of the city, officials said.
