Korea Glocal Education Fair closes in Yeosu

YEOSU, South Korea, June 3 (Yonhap) -- An international education fair intended to seek and discuss the direction of future education in the era of digital transformation closed in the southwestern city of Yeosu on Sunday after South Korea and 22 other countries adopted a joint declaration, organizers said.

The Korea Glocal Education Fair 2024 was held at Expo Ocean Park in Yeosu, some 320 kilometers south of Seoul, for five days under the theme of "Education for Coexistence and Sustainable Future," they said.

The first-of-its-kind event hosted in South Korea featured special lectures by world-renowned education leaders, conferences on future education, glocal future classrooms, future education exhibitions and festivals, and cultural and arts exchanges.

It was jointly organized by the Jeollanam-do Office of Education, the Ministry of Education, the South Jeolla provincial government and the Gyeongsangbuk-do Office of Education.

The closing ceremony was attended by about 900 people, and 32 education leaders from South Korea and 22 foreign countries read the "Joint Declaration on Glocal Education." The fair attracted about 400,000 visitors.

The Glocal Future Classroom, which is considered the core content of the fair, showcased a classroom that students will attend in 2030. There were special lectures on future education, and the lecturers included Harvard University professor Michael Sandel. The fair also featured the Republic of Korea (South Korea) Education Pavilion run by government agencies and 17 municipal and provincial offices of education, and the Edutech Valley run by domestic and international education companies.
