SEOUL, May 5 (Yonhap) -- Actress Angelina Jolie unfolded a delicate and emotional performance in the struggle for survival movie, "Those Who Wish Me Dead".
The film, which has been released in Korea on the 5th for the first time in the world, has a story plot as intense as its title. Based on the novel of the same name by Michael Koryta, various emotions such as responsibility and fear of characters with their respective stories are reflected in the fast-paced development.
Hannah Faber (Angelina Jolie), a veteran smokejumper and wilderness survival expert, is suffering from guilt for failing to save children from forest fires in the past. Hannah, who deliberately acted dangerously and was on duty alone in the forest fire lookout tower, meets Connor Caserly (Finn Little), a little scared boy chased by killers.
After Connor's father suspects a huge accounting crime he is killed, which Connor witnesses himself. While Connor manages to save his life, he can't beat the killers alone. When Connor asks Hannah, "Are you someone I trust?", the two try to go down to the village, but a fierce fire that will swallow everything that comes in its way.
Along with the fast spreading forest fire and the killer's pursuit to kill, the movie raises tension and thrill to the audience. Jolie, who is regarded as a famous action star in Hollywood, falls from a high watchtower, is struck by lightning, and wields an axe--all which is enough to satisfy the expectations of the audiences who are thirsty for Hollywood blockbusters.
The forest fires devouring the deep forest seem intense even on screen. The scene of the forest fire, filling the big screen with red flames was filmed by setting fire to a 1.21 million square meter forest made in the desert of New Mexico, but not through computer graphics. The flames change depending on the direction of the wind, and forest fires that emit overwhelming heat reveal the overwhelming nature.
However, the movie does not simply focus on providing attractions. It delicately depicts Hannah, who cannot escape from the trauma, and Connor, who has lost his father, help and trust each other, which helps them move forward. Hannah and Connor's pain seems insurmountable, but they take the heavy burden off little by little through sacrificing for each other.
Jolie's delicate emotional performance was also excellent. She reveals Hannah's guilt with empty eyes at the beginning of the movie, and melts her toughness with a calm performance that doesn't show too much emotion under the threat of survival. In the second half, the movie gives catharsis to the audience with a more relaxed look.
Another attraction of the movie is its outstanding female character. The local police officer's wife, Allison Sawyer (Medina Senghore), is not described as vulnerable in the six-month pregnancy setting. Allison Sawyer, who runs a survival camp, is quick to escape from the killers who came home, and draws attention with her strength to overcome the crisis rather than being swept away by emotions.
This movie is restricted to people who are 15 years and over.
