PPP to form task force against deepfake sex crimes
SEOUL, Sept. 3 (Yonhap) -- The ruling People Power Party (PPP) decided Tuesday to step up efforts to prevent deepfake sex crimes after a series of such pornography targeting young women on a messaging app sparked public outrage.
PPP floor leader Choo Kyung-ho made the announcement during a seminar at the National Assembly, saying the party will form a task force to tackle deepfake crimes as the issue concerns multiple standing committees at parliament.
The PPP plans to bring together lawmakers and experts from various committees, including the judiciary and education committees, to thoroughly assess the current situation and come up with countermeasures, he added.
The ruling party is also preparing a bill on expanding the scope of "undercover investigations," which currently applies only to sexual exploitation against minors, to include crimes against adults.
The decision comes after numerous chat rooms suspected of creating and distributing deepfake pornographic material with doctored photos of ordinary women and female service members have been discovered on Telegram recently, with many of the victims and perpetrators known to be teenagers.
