U.S. military reaffirms defense commitment to Asian allies after N.K. missile launches
By Song Sang-ho
WASHINGTON, May 26 (Yonhap) -- U.S. Indo-Pacific Command on Tuesday reaffirmed America's defense commitment to regional allies, hours after North Korea fired multiple close-range ballistic missiles and artillery rockets toward the Yellow Sea.
In a statement, the command said that it is aware of the missile launches and is consulting closely with allies and partners.
"Based on current assessments, this event does not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel or territory, or to our allies," it said. "The United States remains committed to the defense of the U.S. homeland and our allies in the region."
Pyongyang conducted the latest missile launches amid speculation that Chinese President Xi Jinping may visit North Korea soon following his separate meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this month.
