S. Korea, U.S. to strengthen cooperation in combating N. Korean virtual asset heists

SEOUL -- South Korea and the United States have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in combating North Korea's stealing of virtual assets, the presidential office here said Thursday.

According to the office, Wang Yun-jong, the third deputy national security adviser, visited Washington from Monday to Wednesday and discussed the issue with Anne Neuberger, the U.S. deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies.

Senior U.S. diplomats to visit S. Korea next week for workshop on N.K. human rights violations

WASHINGTON -- Two senior U.S. diplomats will travel to South Korea next week to attend a workshop on human rights violations in North Korea and other events, the State Department said Wednesday.

During their trip from Monday to Oct. 11, Special Envoy for North Korean human rights Julie Turner and Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice Beth Van Schaack plan to co-host a high-level strategic workshop centering on accountability for human rights violations in the North, according to the department.

Yoon, Ishiba discuss cooperation on N. Korea in 1st phone talks

SEOUL -- President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japan's new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba held their first phone conversation Wednesday to discuss bilateral ties and cooperation on countering threats posed by North Korea, Yoon's office said.

During the call, Yoon and Ishiba agreed to work on enhancing both bilateral cooperation and trilateral collaboration involving the United States to address North Korean issues.

(3rd LD) S. Korea displays 'monster' Hyunmoo-5 missile for 1st time for Armed Forces Day

SEONGNAM, South Korea -- South Korea showcased its most powerful missile for the first time Tuesday as it marked Armed Forces Day in an apparent warning against North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.

Two mobile missile launchers carrying the Hyunmoo-5, a centerpiece of South Korea's retaliation plan against a major North Korean attack, were among military equipment displayed at a ceremony at Seoul Air Base in Seongnam, just south of the capital.

N. Korea removed as observer from Asia-Pacific anti-money laundering group

SEOUL -- North Korea has been removed as an observer of a regional anti-money laundering group due to its lack of engagement and failure to fulfill obligations, South Korea's foreign ministry said Monday.

The unanimous decision was made at the 26th general assembly of the Asia Pacific Group on Money Laundering (APG), held in the United Arab Emirates last Tuesday, the ministry said in a press release.

S. Korea, U.S., Japan to team up for tracing N. Korea's illegal cyber activities

SEOUL -- South Korea, the United States and Japan have agreed to bolster joint efforts to combat North Korea's illegal cyber activities, which are increasingly targeting the virtual currency industry, the presidential office said Monday.

The agreement was reached during a virtual meeting on Friday, attended by Wang Yun-jong, the third deputy national security adviser; Anne Neuberger, the U.S. deputy national security advisor for cyber and emerging technologies; and Keiichi Ichikawa, deputy head of Japan's National Security Secretariat.
