LOS ANGELES, June 29 (Yonhap) -- "F9," the latest chapter in the popular "The Fast and the Furious" franchise recorded 79 billion won worth of tickets in U.S. box offices during the first weekend of the movie's release.

This record marks the biggest opening performance of a movie released in the pandemic-hit box office.

"F9: The Fast Saga" reached the top of the box office between June 25-27 (KST), bringing in around $70 million in ticket sales, according to CNN on Monday (KST).

The action blockbuster has made the largest debut at the U.S. box office since "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" was released in December 2019.

CNN also reported that "the performance of 'F9' is significant for an industry that's trying to get back on its feet following the Covid outbreak that sent box office numbers plummeting."

Originally scheduled to be released last May, "F9" was delayed several times due to COVID-19, and later released in June in time for the expansion of vaccinations in the U.S.

"F9" was first released in South Korea and other countries last month, earning $405 million before premiering in U.S. theaters.

"'F9''s opening weekend performance shows that Universal's decision early on in the pandemic to move the film well into 2021 was the absolute best move," said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore.

Following up, Marvel's "Black Widow" and Warner Bros' "The Suicide Squad" will hit theaters next month.
