Cambodia to deport 59 S. Koreans involved in job scams Friday: report

SEOUL, Oct. 16 (Yonhap) -- Cambodia plans to deport 59 South Korean nationals detained due to their alleged involvement in job scams this week, a foreign news outlet reported Thursday, after the Seoul government sent a response team to the country to address the issue.

Cambodia's national police said in a statement they will deport 59 Korean nationals who have been either rescued from cyberscam centers or detained for other crimes to their home country on Friday in cooperation with the Korean Embassy in Phnom Penh, according to a report by AFP.

About 80 South Koreans linked to job scams in Cambodia are missing or their safety cannot be confirmed, and more than 60 Korean nationals were confined in the Southeast Asian nation in connection to such incidents, according to Seoul officials.

A joint government response team arrived in Cambodia on Wednesday to tackle widening job scams involving the abduction and confinement of Korean nationals and bring back the detained people.

A college student in his 20s was found dead in southern Cambodia in August, after allegedly being tortured while in captivity by an online scam ring. His death sparked public outrage in South Korea, and the government team was formed in response.
