Autopsy due next week for S. Korean student killed in Cambodia
SEOUL, Oct. 17 (Yonhap) -- The body of a South Korean student who was reportedly tortured to death by a criminal organization in Cambodia will undergo an autopsy in the Southeast Asian country next week, the Korean National Police Agency said Friday.
The agency said it will dispatch police investigators to Cambodia to attend the autopsy, seeking to determine the cause and circumstances of the student's death.
Two officers from the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency are scheduled to depart for Cambodia as early as this weekend to participate in the autopsy procedure, the agency said. They plan to closely examine the cause of his death, method of crime and presence of external injury, it added.
The student was found dead on Aug. 8 near Bokor Mountain in Kampot Province, where employment scams and detentions targeting South Koreans and foreigners have frequently occurred.
The South Korean Consulate in Cambodia reportedly notified his bereaved family earlier this week that the autopsy will likely be performed on Oct. 20 or 21.
The autopsy will be led by a forensic pathologist from the National Forensic Service and its results will be shared with domestic investigative agencies through an official notification process. Following the autopsy, the student's body will be cremated and repatriated to South Korea.
