ROME, June 4 (Yonhap) – S. Korean world-renowned conductor Chung Myung-whun(69) has been awarded the honor of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic by the Italian President.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella presented Chung with the “Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy” on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the Republic on June 1(local time), according to the Presidential palace.

The Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, established in 1951, is awarded for figures with great achievements in fields of politics, economy, culture, and arts.

According to the Embassy of South Korea, Rome, Chung received the second ranking honor of the Republic.

Italy's world-renowned tenor Andrea Bocelli and director Giuseppe Tornatore of the film "Cinema Paradiso" have also received the medal.

Among foreigners, famous American singer Frank Sinatra and others have been honored.

Meanwhile, Chung conducted the concert performed at the Quirinale Palace by the Orchestra of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the Republic on June 2.
