SEOUL, Feb. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korean actress Son Eun-seo, 38, has been showing off her charms both in SBS’ Friday-Saturday drama “Payback: Money and Power” and Disney+’s original drama series “Big Bet.”

During an interview held at a cafe in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on Feb. 8, the actress introduced her two different characters saying, “The two are similar in that both chase after a human desire, whether it is fame or money, but they are also completely different in the way they pursue those desires.”

“Payback,” the crime-action drama series that recently wrapped up, sees Son as Myung Se-hee, a covetous woman who dreams of entering the Blue House by making her prosecutor husband the president. Meanwhile, Son appears as Kim So-jung, who runs away after stealing 10 billion won from casino visitors, in another crime-action drama series “Big Bet.”

As she had introduced, the two characters seem to share similarities but take two different paths in the ways they go after their dreams: Se-hee takes her moves quietly but powerfully as she conceals herself behind her loan shark father and prosector husband; on the other hand, So-jung seduces a man to win what she wants, demonstrating her eagerness by flattering the rich customers.

The 38-year-old actress was evaluated to have skillfully expressed both characters in two different ways. While Son played Myung Se-hee gracefully, she acted out Kim So-jung as a more vulgar character.

The actress said, “Kim So-jung is desperate to change her present conditions,” adding, “She is penniless but has a sick mother whom she needs to send to a nursing home, and she even has a history of fraud. She must have been sick of being poor, and she would have acted on the spot due to her belief that she lives a better life when she gets the money she needs.”

“On the other hand, Myung Se-hee is a person who goes after where she would eventually end up rather than merely finding a way to move on from her present,” Son compared. “She has enough money in her pocket, but always had been called the daughter of a loan shark since she was very young, which naturally made her covet fame.”

The actress said that she also changed how she talked and behaved according to the two characters.

“When I played Se-hee, I spoke 1.5 times slower than usual, focusing on delivering the nuance as well as the content of the lines. On the other hand, So-jung speaks way faster, and I paid more attention to the relationship she has with the role Lee Dong-hwi played,” Son explained.

Son said, “I cannot say one role was easier to play than the other,” explaining, “However, as So-jung was more emotional, I could just simply act out what she feels. In the meantime, Se-hee is used to shrewdly hiding her emotions and thoughts, which had me act her more subtly by glaring at something and more.”

In “Payback,” Myung Se-hee not only betrays her biological father but also commits irregularities only to fulfill her ambition, and Kim So-jung in “Big Bet” deploys a man who adores her and makes off with other people’s lives which puts her to death.

Looking back, Son said that she wanted viewers to understand the background behind these two characters’ decision to devise rather looting and morally corrupt methods to get their hands on what they wanted.

“What Se-hee and So-jung did cannot be justified whatsoever. However, I tried to understand the background behind their rather unjustifiable decisions as a daughter who faced prejudice as a daughter of a loan shark and a woman who has been poorly off for her entire life, respectively.”

The release of “Payback” and “Big Bet” recently had viewers pay attention to the actress; however, she is actually a veteran actress who recently celebrated her 18 years of acting.

She made her debut as a model in 2005, appeared in multiple cosmetics and printer commercials, and was soon dubbed as a “next-generation CF star.” Since then, she has been continuing her career as an actress by appearing in an array of hit movies and drama series, including the mystery-drama television series “Voice” seasons 1 to 4 (2017 - 2021).

With a laugh, the actress said, “I was so proud when I realized that there were some people who were reminded of my appearance in several other films and drama series when as they watched ‘Payback’ and ‘Big Bet.’”

“I have been an actress for a long time, but I mostly played the role of a rich daughter. It is a share that I did not have many opportunities to find out what kind of roles I can play well. When young, I thought about how many scenes I appear in, but now I want to play an eye-catching role that leaves an impact in the work even if it is a minor supporting role.”
