SEOUL, July 22 (Yonhap) -- ENA Wednesday-Thursday drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” broke its own highest record with an audience rating of 13.1%.

According to Nielsen Korea, a ratings research company on Friday, episode 8 of tvN Wednesday-Thursday drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” (“Attorney Woo”) which aired the day before, had an audience rating of 13.1% (pay-TV households). This is 3.3%, 2.6%, and 4.5% higher than KBS “Jinxed at First,” JTBC “Insider,” and tvN “Eve” respectively.

In fact, “Attorney Woo” did not receive much attention before the release as it was produced on ENA, a channel unfamiliar to viewers. The first episode had an audience rating of only 0.9%.

However, “Attorney Woo” created a sensation as soon as the first episode was released, gaining sympathy from the viewers. It is evaluated as “well-made” drama that has all 3 qualities: a lovely character, a sympathetic message, and sincerity that touches viewers’ hearts.

The most popular factor is the character Woo Young-woo, a lawyer with autism spectrum disorder.

In the beginning, the characteristics of having a genius brain and autism at the same time was highlighted, but as the story unfolds, the charm of the character itself is exerting its power.

The introduction that Woo Young-woo does whenever she meets someone new explains the autism spectrum disorder while showing that she is a quirky and funny person.

Round eyes like a surprised rabbit which cannot focus eyes on any one place, rhythmic steps as if she were dancing, and the way she suddenly spits out her opinions are unique characteristics of Woo Young-woo, which she referenced from a person with autism spectrum disorder.

Above all, Park Eun-bin's acting as Woo Young-woo is excellent. While naturally reviving the characteristics of being autistic, she also shows her own loveliness.

From difficult knowledges of law to whales, she pours out a lot of lines like a rapid-fire gun, and each pronunciation is accurate, which helps deliver lines more clearly.

“Attorney Woo” has a lot of charm also as a legal drama. The stories of the socially underprivileged, such as the elderly, autistic, sexual minorities, North Korean defectors, and small businesses, are naturally folded.

While Woo Young-woo approaching cases like a wife who was charged with murder as her husband with dementia died after quarreling with her or a bride who sued for damages after her wedding dress fell during a wedding ceremony with brilliant ideas is interesting, it also reminds viewers of values that have been neglected or forgotten.

Ha Jae-geun, a popular culture critic said, “‘Attorney Woo’ contains the message that everyone, including the minority and the weak, should live together,” adding, “This work gives viewers comfort and satisfaction because modern people who live fiercely have minds that 'I don't want to be left behind'.”
