SEOUL, May 25 (Yonhap) – “Even if you are a person who doesn’t have much presence, you stand out when you wear pink clothes. I wear pink in terms of representing the marginalized and unnoticed people.”
American R&B singer-songwriter Pink Sweat$ said during a press conference held in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, on May 25 afternoon, “Pink has a power to give me energy like a ‘superman cape,’” adding, "I'm concerned that this color will fix my image but I can't appeal to everyone."
The singer got the stage name Pink Sweat$ as he usually wears Pink. Pink Sweat$, debuted in 2018, has drawn attention at home and abroad with cheerful melodies and sophisticated yet soft songs of R&B genre.
He mentioned regarding the key to his popularity in Korea, "It is because my songs usually depict the messages of love and happiness," adding, "Love and happiness are topics that anyone can relate to beyond language barriers.
Over the past two years, more and more people have said that it is difficult to feel "love and happiness" due to the spread of COVID-19. Recently, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has also increased the number of people in need of help.
Pink Sweat$ said, "I could feel how strong the human spirit and soul were during the difficult period of the pandemic," adding, "I thought music, hope, and communication were essential during a tough time. It was important for me to trust happiness to move forward and write the related lyrics.”
The song “Honesty” from the singer’s debut mini album “Volume 1” was certified a platinum by Recording Industry Association of America and surpassed 5 billion cumulative streams worldwide. “At My Worst,” which was dropped in 2020, also drew attention of the domestic listeners.
Pink Sweat$ said, "I found out about my popularity in Korea while communicating with K-pop artists," adding, "I got to know that my music was loved as he said, 'Your music is popular in Korea so I can hear it anywhere.’”
The singer visited Korea to participate in “The 14th Seoul Jazz Festival 2022,” which will be held at 88 Lawn Field in Seoul Olympic Park from May 27 to 29, as a headliner. It is his first time visiting the country.
