SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- "At first, I only thought about the character being relentless, but after hearing from Choi Bool-am about the character, I realized it wasn't just about being relentless but emphasizing his tenacity and instinct," said Lee Dong-hwi, who played Detective Kim Sang-soon in the recently concluded MBC drama "Chief Detective 1958."
Kim Sang-soon, portrayed by Lee, is a detective who will go to any lengths to catch criminals, earning him the nickname "Mad Dog." This character was originally played by the late actor Kim Sang-soon in the classic drama "Chief Inspector (Susa Banjang)." In an interview on the 20th at a café in Jongno, Seoul, Lee Dong-hwi explained, "I tried to capture the determination in Detective Kim Sang-soon's eyes and his relentless pursuit."
Choi Bool-am, who played Chief Inspector Park Young-han in the original series, shared insights with Lee about Kim Sang-soon, describing him as an actor with an excellent memory and a character with a keen instinct and thoroughness in investigations.
"Since 'Chief Detective 1958' deals with an earlier period than the original series, there was more room to explore the character. Choi Bool-am's insights were invaluable," Lee said.
In the drama, Detective Kim Sang-soon often hides in the police station's cabinet for secret naps but is always the first to rush to a crime scene. Known for his fiery sense of justice, he would declare, "We must apprehend them!"
Lee's portrayal included numerous action scenes, demonstrating his proficiency in dynamic sequences, a skill he had previously shown in the film "Extreme Job."
"Action scenes are not a discomfort for me," Lee asserted confidently, noting that his love for dance helped him master the rhythm and coordination needed for action sequences. When asked if he sustained any injuries, he proudly stated, "None at all."
Lee Dong-hwi described "Chief Detective 1958" as a tribute to the original "Susa Banjang" series. "I want to dedicate all the credit to Choi Bool-am and the other original cast members, Kim Sang-soon, Cho Kyung-hwan, Kim Ho-jung, and Nam Sung-hoon," he said. The original series was notable for using the real names of its actors for the characters, adding a unique layer of authenticity.
Reflecting on the drama's success, which recorded over 10% viewership, and the simultaneous release of his film "The Roundup: No Way Out," which drew millions to theaters, Lee expressed his surprise and relief. "I was worried about the timing, but I was fortunate that the roles in 'The Roundup' and 'Chief Detective 1958' were so different," he explained.
In "The Roundup: No Way Out," Lee played a criminal running an illegal online gambling operation, a stark contrast to his role as Detective Kim Sang-soon. Despite the success, Lee remains humble, focusing on the future rather than resting on his laurels.
"I'm always thinking about the next project, whether the previous one was successful or not. I can't take sole credit; it's all about being grateful," he concluded.
