SEOUL, Sept. 3 (Yonhap) -- "Does Young Tak have to stick to trot?"
Singer Young Tak posed this question when discussing his upcoming mini-album "Supersuper" with Super Junior members Kim Heechul and Leeteuk. Upon hearing the title track, a dance genre song, they remarked, "This doesn't sound like trot."
At the album release showcase held in Yongsan, Seoul, on the 3rd, Young Tak shared this anecdote and expressed his sense of responsibility, stating, "I have fans who have come to love me, and I feel a responsibility to work harder to bring them something fun and fresh."
He continued, "I want to show them that I'm putting in effort so they can feel proud of choosing the right singer or think, 'He's admirable.' I always strive to go beyond my limits."
Young Tak explained that creating an album entirely composed of trot songs is challenging. "I've spent years working and practicing various genres with senior colleagues and composers. Now that I have the love of my fans, there's no reason not to share what I can do."
Young Tak began his singing career in 2005 by contributing to the soundtrack of the film Marrying the Mafia II. After many years of relative obscurity, he transitioned to trot in 2016. His 2018 track "Why Are You Coming Out From There?" gained popularity through social media, leading to wider recognition. In 2020, he secured second place on the show Mr. Trot, catapulting him to stardom. His first and second full-length albums released in 2022 and 2023 respectively, sold 530,000 and 620,000 copies in their first week.
This showcase marked the first time in Young Tak's 19-year career that he hosted such an event. The new album spans multiple genres, including dance, trot, ballads, and Britpop. The album features five tracks, including the title track "Supersuper," the R&B track "Bing-eo in the Desert," the traditional music-infused trot "Sarang-ok," the emotional ballad "Is Fall Coming?" and the Britpop band sound of "Brighten."
Young Tak revealed that the idea for the album took shape during a trip to the UK in February. "I brought a small keyboard and some equipment with me, and though I went with a light heart, I think that was the starting point for this album. I wanted to create music I wouldn't be embarrassed about."
The title track "Supersuper" is a dance track brimming with Young Tak's signature lively and upbeat energy. With a retro synthesizer sound reminiscent of a protagonist in a boy's comic and a catchy hook, the song aims to convey a hopeful message of "It's not too late to find your true dream."
Young Tak described "Supersuper" as "a retro disco track that boosts dopamine and energy, making it the perfect song to lift your spirits while working." He hopes the song will energize listeners and bring them hope.
Expressing his deep affection for his fans, he referred to them as "family," saying, "They are like a precious family with whom I want to stay together for a long time, and they are my life's purpose and driving force."
