JINAN, July 12 (Yonhap) -- The remains of copper smelting during the pre-modern era were excavated in Daeyang-ri, Dongdong-myeon, Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do.

The Gaya Culture Institute at Kunsan National University, which excavated the site said that the excavation results proves the true nature of the copper smelting facility called "Donghyangso" recorded in documents of the Joseon dynasty.

Earlier on, two braking furnaces and a large disposal site were excavated.

One of the two furnaces is believed to be a facility that extracts copper from ore. This was the first relic to be investigated in Korea, and it considered to have high academic value.

The fourth investigation was conducted this year to determine the status and nature of the remaining braking and disposal sites confirmed by the excavation investigation last year. Both braking furnaces were oval-shaped, and only part of the basic facilities made of charcoal and stone remain.

The disposal site is 20.2 meters wide, suggesting that large-scale smelting has been carried out around here.

Inside the site, various artifacts, including slags, were excavated.
