SEOUL, May 2 (Yonhap) -- Actor Koo Kyo-hwan (40) transformed into Jung Ki-hoon, an archaeologist in TVING’s original series “Monstrous.”

Koo, who gained fame after playing Han Ho-yeol in last year’s Netflix original series “D.P.,” also showed off his unique acting in this work.

Jung, once a promising archaeologist, loses his daughter in a sudden accident and falls out with his wife Lee Soo-jin (Shin Hyun-bin). He lives on after creating a magazine called “Monthly Scary Stories,” while running a YouTube channel.

Jung is a pleasant character who says 'I need money' at the request of the monks to find a cursed Buddha statue, and says 'Let's go,' 'I can do this on my own,' even in dangerous situations.

In response, Koo explained that he approached Jung and acted in the same way as Han Ho-yeol in "D.P."

“Is there a certain way how an archaeologist looks? Are there any forms and certain looks in this profession? It’s not like you have to wear a certain uniform to be an archaeologist. I just wanted to express the archaeologist, Jung Ki-hoon, who lives downstairs and takes out the trash like others. (laughs).”

“Monstrous,” the series in which director Yeon Sang-ho participated in the writing, is a supernatural thriller that depicts a virtual village called Jinyang-gun, where people who see the eyes of the cursed Buddha statue, face their hells.

“Occult is just a category of the genres of ‘Monstrous,’ and while acting, I thought that it was Ki-hoon and Soo-jin’s drama. I’ve acted while concentrating on the characters Soo-jin, Ha-young (Park So-i), and Seok-hee (Kim Ji-young),” explained Koo.

Koo, who reunited with director Yeon after the movie “Penninsula,” said, “I was pleased to see the director once again. It is always captivating of him to not bother to express his charms. He is a natural, funny storyteller,” adding, “I’m honored to be a part of Yeoniverse (Yeon Sang-ho’s universe).”

When asked about the second season of “Monstrous,” Koo replied, “Would it lead to the next season? I’m curious what kind of stories will come out if there is a season two.”
