‘Pachiko’s original novel gains popularity… No.1 bestseller in fiction

SEOUL, March 31 (Yonhap) -- With the release of the Apple TV+ Korean original series "Pachinko," more and more readers are looking for the original novel.

Aladin, an online bookstore, announced on Thursday that sales of Lee Min-jin's first and second novel "Pachinko" increased 15.2 times compared to the same period last year.

The book ranked first and second in bestsellers in the novel field and third and fourth in the overall rankings, respectively. Readers in their 40s accounted for 37.9 percent of the total.

Written by Lee Min-jin, "Pachinko" is a novel about the turbulent stories of Koreans who have lived in Japan for four generations from Yeongdo, Busan, Japanese colonial era to Osaka, Japan. It was published in the U.S. in 2017 and became the final nominee for the National Book Award for Fiction.

The drama starring Youn Yuh-jung and Lee Min-ho was released on Apple TV+ on March 25.
