SEOUL, Jan. 17 (Yonhap) – “The First Slam Dunk,” the 2022 animated version of the 90s epic manga series “Slam Dunk,” has garnered more than 1 million South Korean moviegoers in only 2 weeks after its premiere, according to the distributor NEW Tuesday.

The film has recorded a total of 1 million and 65 admissions as of 2: 40 p.m. Tuesday, topping the South Korean box office as the first movie to surpass 1 million admissions in 2023.

Amid the “Avatar” sequel continuing to outdo itself, the Japanese film has also been managing to stay at No.2 on the South Korean box office chart. The distributor feels the box office potential of this animated version of a manga masterpiece will continue to grow, as it has been manifesting the power of the word-of-mouth over the past 2 weeks.

With the film attracting more moviegoers during the second week than it did in the first week of the premiere, the anime film is expected to sell more tickets over the Lunar New Year holidays.

“The First Slam Dunk,” written and directed by Takehiko Inoue, the writer of the original manga series, depicts the basketball game between Buksan high school and Sangwang Engineering high school.
