SEOUL, October 24 (Yonhap) -- A large shopping mall in Seoul will host the Dokdo Museum Seoul, where visitors can experience the present, the history and the natural environment.

The Northeast Asian History Foundation announced on October 24 that it will hold an opening ceremony at Times Square in Yeongdeungpo on the afternoon of October 25 to commemorate the expansion and relocation of the Dokdo Museum Seoul under the slogan "Dokdo next to us."

The Dokdo Museum was opened in Seodaemun in 2012 and moved to Times Square in Yeongdeungpo this time. While securing the site and budget, the relocation project began in 2021 and paid off in about a year and a half.

The relocated museum is 1,320 square meters. It has more than doubled in size compared to the previous Seodaemun Experience Center.

Under the theme of "Dokdo, the home of our lives," the Dokdo museum consists of four thematic exhibition halls: "The Present of Dokdo," "The History of Dokdo," "The Nature of Dokdo," and "The Future of Dokdo."

"The Present of Dokdo" sheds light on the current story of Dokdo, which was recognized as a living area with Ulleungdo. Visitors will be able to see Dodong Village from the Dokdo Observatory on Ulleungdo Island in real time.

The History of Dokdo introduces the 1,500-year history of Dokdo. Along with the timeline, it consists of data, maps, and subject videos. Through a large touch monitor, visitors will be able to check the appearance of Dokdo by zooming in to the highlands from home and abroad.

"The Nature of Dokdo" shows rocks, various topographical features, animals, and plants around the east and west islands. In particular, the Dokdo model displayed was made on the largest scale (1:100) among the indoor Dokdo models.

The Future of Dokdo tells various stories about Dokdo related to what we have to do. Information regarding Dokdo can be checked through six large monitors composed of topics.

In addition, a large media wall installed at the entrance shows a media art video depicting the Korean Peninsula, Ulleung Island, and Dokdo Island.

The Northeast Asia History Foundation plans to apply various advanced technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and metaverse to the Dokdo Experience Center in the future.

The experience center will be available starting on October 26. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.
