SEOUL, June 5 (Yonhap) -- “The two jobs of the character was very attractive,” said So Ji-sub, at the online production presentation for “Doctor Lawyer,” which was held on the 3rd. “Doctors save lives in the operating room and lawyers save people’s lives in the court. While shooting the drama, I thought it was a good choice for me to choose (this work).”
So Ji-sub will appear in a TV drama for the first time in 4 years after receiving the Grand Prize at the MBC Drama Awards for his role in the drama “My Secret Terrius” in 2018.
“Doctor Lawyer,” is a medical court drama in which a genius surgeon became a lawyer specializing in medical litigation after losing everything as he met a spoiled prosecutor, to punish the wicked and comfort the unjust victims.
So Ji-sub plays Han Yi-han, a former genius surgeon who is now a lawyer specializing in medical litigation.
So Ji-sub introduced the character as “Han Yi-han was a genius doctor who lost everything due to a rigged operation and comes back as a lawyer to get revenge.”
“It was only difficult and difficult. I read the script as if I was studying in a reading room,” he said.
“The terminology seemed easier than I thought (at first), but as I tried to memorize it, I couldn’t get it to stick it to my lips,” he continued. “I kept asking, memorizing and checking to the person who gave me legal advice and to the person who gave me surgical advice at the filming site.”
Im Soo-hyang, who also plays a prosecutor, had a hard time learning technical terms.
Guem Seok-young, played by Im Soo-hyang, is a prosecutor who believes that the rebirth of criminals comes from punishment rather than forgiveness and leniency, but will do her best to prove the victim’s innocence.
“Because I thought the pronunciation had to be precise to play the role of a prosecutor, I acted with the mindset of pronouncing ‘ganjang gongjang gongjangjang (Korean tongue twister)’ every time,” said Im Soo-hyang. “I also watched all of the prosecution related documentaries to see how prosecutors act.”
“The events begin with Seok-young’s narrative, and I think that part is attractive,” she continued. “I hope people would enjoy the story of the characters, and the series of events and revenge.”
In addition to the two, the drama also features Jaden Lee (Shin Sunng-rok), the Asian branch manager of Honors Hand, a company specializing in lobbying and investment.
Shin Sung-rok said, "Jaden is a lobbyist and an executive of a large company, so he may look stiff, but he excluded that feeling and acted as an aggressive and abrupt character."
“A hospital is a place where life and death are decided, and a court is where one’s future is decided according to the judgement,” said director Lee Yong-seok. “With these two places as the background, in the process of uncovering the truth by Han Yi-han and Geum Seok-young, Jaden Lee interrupts the process, making the story unpredictable.”
“The standards that the audience look for has increased, and with the international audience watching it live, I had to make sure that the quality of the drama should be raised not lowered,” he emphasized. “I made sure that the drama was realistic enough even for the ones working in the field of both law and medicine."
Regarding the controversy over the overlapping arrangement of the drama’s lead role, Im Soo-hyang, who is currently appearing in the SBS Monday-Tuesday drama, “Woori the Virgin,” director Lee commented, “It was a situation that no one wanted. Please look at the passion and the story of the drama instead.”
