SEOUL November 01 (Yonhap) -- Principal Trunchbull has a giant bump on her back, a mole, size of a bead sitting next to her nose. Her physique makes grown adults to shrivel and freeze in front of her. However small little child who is only coming up to the waste line of the principal Trunchbull, Matilda makes the statement louder than anyone else. “NO THAT’S WRONG!”

Matilda the musical which showcases a young child figure with magical powers has returned to the stage of South Korea in 4 years. The musical which kicked off at the D-cube art center in Seoul, originates from the writing by Roald Dahl Matilda which was later on first produced as a Musical by the Royal Shakespeare Company in United Kingdom. It first premiered in United Kingdom in 2011 and received 4 of the awards including Olivier Award and Tony Awards, receiving the recognition. In 2018 South Korea was selected as the first country to host Matilda the Musical out of all the non English speaking nations. Shows in South Korea successfully attracted over 170 thousand audiences.

In the world where parents are proving the unlimited love to their kids, parents of Matilda yells at Matilda by stating “Your existence makes me want to vomit” also her parents locked Matilda in her room and tore her books apart knowing that she loves to read.

The way little Matilda protects herself to use her imagination and wit. For example she seeks revenge by putting superglue on her father’s hat, and builds a story based on the imaginary father who can protect her when she feels scared.

Matilda uses her special power not only for herself but also to protect her friends from school and Miss Honey from the scary principal Trunchbull.

Child actors who pull off an extensive amount of lines, songs, and dance moves on top of the stage shows the real life example of the miracle Matilda makes throughout the musical.

Actors who act out the role of Matilda Lim Ha-yoon, Jin Yeon-woo, Choi Eun-young, Ha Sin-bi are the ones who are survivors of 1 to 150 chance of getting the role. Moreover, 20 of the casts who appear as Matilda’s friends from school fill the stage with powerful choreographed dances.

Adult actors who take the stage showcase phenomenal acting as well.

South Korean musical actor Seo Man-seok who originally participated as a swing actor when it first premiered in South Korea is taking the stage as a father figure of Matilda. Using his years worth of practice as a swing actor, Seo Man-seok showcases comical antagonist figure which puts spotlight on the innocence of children characters. Choi Jae-rim who was awarded with the best lead actor’s award at the Korean Music Awards, after participating as Miss Trunchbull, rejoined the cast.

Word plays and lyrics encompassing various layers of meanings, and unique dance choreographies using chalkboards, chairs, hurdles and more entertain the audience.

Choreographies where actors fly over the heads of the audiences and Matilda’s imagination of tricks being performed mid air, provide unforgettable experience to the audience.

Although, Matilda the musical consists of kid protagonists, it is enjoyable for adult audiences as well.

Miss Honey, who always ran away from Miss Trunchbull became more courageous and become more mature after she meets Matilda, shows that Matilda the Musical is not only intended for kid audiences, but also adults as well.

The musical will continue on until February 26 of 2023.
