'Confidential Assignment 2' continues to do well on box office

SEOUL, Oct. 17 (Yonhap) -- Box-office hit "Confidential Assignment 2: International," the Korean action-comedy sequel to a 2017 hit released during the Chuseok holiday in Sept., has led the Korean Movie sales.

According to the data by the Korea Film Council on Monday, the total sales of film industry was 119.9 billion won, which is about 89.1% of sales in 2019, period before COVID-19. Total number of audiences in thesame month was 9.86 million people, which is 66.9% of audiences in 2019.

Korean film sales recorded 91.7 billion won, up 260.1% (66.2 billion won) from the same month previous year. The number of moviegoers was 8.99 million, an increase of 237.6% (6.32 million) from Sept. of last year.

The share of Korean film sales in Sept. was 90.0% and the share of audiences was 91.2%, both of which recorded the highhest in September of all time.

Sales of foreign films, without any major work released this year, recorded 10.2 billion (870,000) won, a decrease even compared to that of 2021, a period during the pandemic.

"Confidential Assignment 2" contributed a lot to such increase in Korean movie sales in September. The film led the top position at the box office with sales of 59.8 billion won (5.84 million) in Sept.

The movie sales increased 22.1 billion won (2.1 million people) in only three days (9-11) during the Chuseok holiday. According to the data by the Korea Film Council, this is the hightest number of all-time during Chuseok holiday.

Low-budget film "6/45," which placed second at the box office after "Confidential Assignment 2," also recorded sales of 12.8 billion won (1.72 million won) in Sept., contributing to the success of Chuseok comedy movies.

"Avatar Remastered," among foreign films, performed the best with sales of 2.5 billion won (150,000), placing fifth at the box office.

Since Korean films were showing good performances during the Chuseok holiday, domestic distributors took the top position in distributor sales in Sept. CJ E&M, which distributed 10 films including "Confidential Assignment 2," led the top spot with sales of 60.6 billion won (59.5% share). Distributors Sidus Pictures and then Home Choice followed.

For the independent film category, the animation movie "Pil" recorded sales of 38.64 million won (4251 people), topping in the box office for independent and art film category.
