SEOUL, Apr. 6 (Yonhap) -- Major works that will be put on the stage of the 17th Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF) have been unveiled.

The British hit musical “9 to 5,” which received rave reviews for its witty depiction of rather relatively sensitive issues such as gender discrimination and absurdity in workplaces, will kick off this long-awaited festival.

Screenwriter Patricia Lesnick and singer-songwriter Dolly Parton joined hands to create this epic musical, which was first staged on Broadway in 2009. Lesnick was also in charge of producing the original film of the same name, on which the musical is based.

The festival is scheduled to wrap up with Kazakhstan’s national musical “Roza Baglanova,” which tells the story of Kazakh legendary soprano opera and pop music singer Roza who was honored with many awards throughout her career, which she never stopped even during the Second World War.

French and German musicals will also be taking the stage: The French musical “Babel-O,” which talks about the never-ending battle between good and evil, will be on stage along with Korean traditional music playing in the background. Meanwhile, the German musical “Effi Briest,” which tells a family tragedy induced by honor and responsibility, will follow.

In addition, the Korean creative musicals “Secret Garden” and “Marry Anning” will also be meeting international musical fans.

Several additional events, including the Suseongmot Musical Fringe Festival, the screening of Korea’s first-ever musical film “Turandot: The Kingdom of Darkness,” and the DIMF Musical Star Final Round will also be enriching the festival.
