SEOUL, April 14 (Yonhap) -- Artificial intelligence is transforming physical spaces from fixed environments into flexible, experience-driven platforms, industry experts said, as changing consumer habits and the rise of non-face-to-face services reshape cities and businesses.
AI-powered spaces combine media systems, lighting and digital content to allow a single venue to serve multiple purposes without physical remodeling. Experts describe the trend as adding a "digital layer" to physical environments.
Examples are already emerging in South Korea. The Seocho Smart Youth Center in Seoul has introduced immersive AI-based media systems that allow students to interact with and create digital content, while Kyung Hee University's Central Library has adopted panoramic media installations to turn traditional reading areas into multifunctional cultural spaces.
Industry officials say AI-based spaces can reduce renovation costs and construction waste by updating software rather than rebuilding interiors. They also enable personalized experiences by adapting content in real time based on visitor data.
Experts predict such adaptive spaces will expand across education, culture and retail sectors as younger generations increasingly seek interactive and immersive offline experiences.
