HANAM, July 12 (Yonhap) -- Hanam City of Gyeonggi Province announced that to build a history museum by 2025, which will specialize in exhibiting and promoting sites and artifacts from the Baekje period in Gamil district, on Monday.
Hanam city will apply to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on July 23 for a preliminary evaluation on the feasibility of establishing the museum.
Based on the opinions of the museum's construction advisory committee and the citizens' votes, the city has decided to name the Gamil district museum "Hanam GamIl Baekje Museum (tentative title)."
LH, the developer of the Gamil district development project, will invest 15 billion won to build a museum with two floors above ground and a total floor area of 25,16 square meters in the historical heritage park in the district.
During the excavation surveys conducted between November 2015 and March 2019, 52 stone-chamber tombs from the Baekje Dynasty period were identified and a total of 1,720 artifacts were excavated.
Not many stone-chamber tombs built by Baekje have been confirmed so far and the Hanam city plans to relocate and restore 15 of the 52 stone tombs to the museum.
The city explained that the artifacts excavated together, including gold and silver accessories and Chinese porcelain, are valuable historical and cultural materials that show the lifestyle of Baekje's ruling class and international exchanges.
