SEOUL, Nov. 16 (Yonhap) -- Netflix, one of the leading video streaming services famously known for its well-made genre series, will draw another dystopian world with the fantasy thriller "Hellbound."
Netflix announced Tuesday that it will release director Yeon Sang-ho's six-part series "Hellbound," based on the director's own webtoon with the same title, on Nov. 19.
The Korean-language series depicts a hell-like chaotic situation after people are sentenced by figures from hell. The supernatural fantasy also features incidents between a group of religious fanatics and those who try to discover the truth.
Actor Yoo Ah-in (35), who plays the role of Jeong Jin-soo, the leader of a cult named "Sajinrihwe," said, "The (drama) title itself was very impactful," adding, "I was attracted to 'Hellbound' because it was the first series to center a story around hell."
"It took just a couple of keywords and brief explanations of the work to draw me in. My heart was already with the series before I even looked at the script, and when I did read it, I went crazy," Yoo said laughing.
Regarding his character, Yoo explained, "He is a person who encourages people to live justly while giving meaning and order in a world where supernatural and shocking phenomena occur."
Actress Kim Hyun-joo (44), who plays Min Hye-jin, a lawyer struggling to reveal the truth about the supernatural phenomenon, said, "Hye-jin is a person who believes the legal system created by people's autonomy is morally just while Jeong Jin-soo is not."
"I have been reluctant to challenge starring in plays based on original works or a role inspired a real-life figure because I thought it would be difficult to accurately express them. However, the original webtoon was expressed so realistically that the characters' emotions and expressions were very touching."
Actor Park Jung-min (34), who wrote a recommendation for the original webtoon after becoming deeply attached to the work, introduced himself as "a reader and audience who strongly sympathizes with the meaning and message behind this series."
Park stars in "Hellbound" as Bae Young-jae," an ordinary broadcasting station PD who lives for only his family and himself. "I was very happy that the webtoon I loved so much was well visualized into a drama series."
He also expressed his hope for "Hellbound" to become a global box office hit, saying, "The series depicts fear and confusion that everyone will be able to connect with, so I believe viewers living in foreign countries can also relate to the story."
"Hellbound" was the first Korean-language drama to enter the Toronto International Film Festival and one of the first three invitees to Busan International Film Festival's new TV series category before its release. The series raised expectations to succeed as the next most popular Netflix show, following "Squid Game."
Director Yeon, who wrote the original webtoon with writer Choi Gyu-seok, said, "I made this series because I wanted to create a playground-like world where I can play cinematically."
Yeon, who has previously created several of his own dystopian worlds with movies like "The King of Pigs" and "Train to Busan," said, "By watching people with different beliefs come in conflict, I hope this gives people an opportunity to think about our society," adding, "I also hope "Hellbound" opens up discussions rather than merely being consumed as another TV show."
