SEOUL, August 24 (Yonhap) -- “Woo to the Young to the Woo!” “Dong to the Gu to the Rami”
Actress Joo Hyun-young, who actively acted as an intern reporter “Joo reporter” at “SNL Korea,” once again made an impression with ENA drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” where she played as Woo Young-woos’s bright and cheerful friend.
Joo Hyun-young, who met at Yonhap News building on Wednesday, a week after the drama ended, was rather quite unlike how she appears on TV. She said she is shy and lives with worries.
Joo Hyun-young said, “I heard many times that I am different from what I appear to be on TV,” adding, “So I was worried about if I could lively act out Donggurami when I got the role.”
She also said, “While Donggurami is simple with no worries, I think a lot and walk around on eggshells,” adding, “I had lot on my mind, captured by the thought that I need to carry it off well.”
She said her another mission was to get rid of the image of “Joo Reporter,” which gained wide popularity in S.Korea.
Joo Hyun-young, “Although the director casted me after watching video of ‘Joo Reporter,’ He didn’t want Donggurami to be like Joo Reporter,” adding, “So I looked for Donggurami’s unique features to completely separate her from ‘Joo Reporter.’ I became more and more passionate as I did not want to give up.”
She continued, “While Joo reporter was like turning a generator by myself, Donggurami had to continuously exchange lines with partners,” adding, “I was thankful that I worked with Park Eun-bin the most.”
Joo Hyun-young said the reason why Donggurami and Woo Young-woo became friends is because they need each other.
“I was fluttered when Woo Young-woo said ‘I feel safe when I am with you’ to Donggurami. It’s not just being protective. Woo Young-woo also says to Donggurami that she does not ‘have any friends.’ Dongurammi knew at one point that not only she protects Woo Young-woo, but Woo Young-woo protects Donggurami.”
Donggurami was the only bubbly character in the drama where comparatively quiet characters including Woo Young-woo starred. She had to ad-lib frequently because there were many scenes that required humorous lines.
Joo Hyun-young said, “On one hand, I was worried about what if unexpected words came out of my mouth and did not align with previous scenes and felt sorry to camera directors,” adding, “But I really wanted to show Donggurami’s real reaction.”
She added, “After hearing that Director told camera director to think about filming nature documentary when filming me, I was able to do it more comfortably,” adding, “The scene where Donggurami and Woo Yong-woo practiced vocal exercises for Woo Young-woo’s first trial was also ad-lib. Because Park Eun-bin replied back, saying ”Ah-Eh-Oh-Woo Woo Young-woo“ on the spot, cute scene was able to be created.”
Donggurami and Woo Young-woo’s unique hello is also made by Joo Hyun-young after she was asked to make one from writer Moon Ji-won. The original script wrote “Woo-young-woo-young-woo” and “Dong-dong-dong-gu-ra-mi.”
The actress said, “I got the rhythm from Big Bang’s ‘Last Farewell,’ and watched social media of hip hop artists to give hip hop vibe,” adding, “While I get request from many places to do it as it got popular, it’s awkward to do it because I only did it with Woo Young-woo.”
Joo Hyun-young chose episode 4 as the hardest. It is the episode where Donggurami’s father, who became involved in an inheritance dispute with brothers, is the main character, and Donngurammi wrecked aunt’s house with drinking bottles on the anniversary of grandfather’s death. She even gets beaten by uncles.
She said, “I was shaking before filming because I had to do unimaginable behaviors and say unthinkable words to seniors who I only saw on TV,” adding, “I was thinking like ‘I am crazy’ and ‘I am not Joo Hyun-young’ and went into the set.”
Joo Hyun-young, who debuted through the movie "AKA 5JO" and did web dramas, said while she is overwhelmed by the popularity of Donggurami following Joo reporter, she is excited.
Joo Hyun-young said, “I have shed tears behind the set after saying ‘Yes’ to not disappoint,” adding, “I controlled myself thinking let’s only focus on acting although there is pressure.”
When asked if she did not worry about continuing funny character, she showed her ambition saying she will show various sides.
“I have liked comedy since I was a kid. I like that I can do comedy in dramas and movies. I am enjoying this moment, thinking let’s do everything I can. It’s not like I will end my career with these works. I want to show different sides of me just like how I did it with Joo reporter to Donggurami.”
