YONGIN, March 28 (Yonhap) -- Yongin Cheoinseong Education Center opened on the 28th in Namsa-eup, Cheoin-gu, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do.
Cheoinseong Fortress, the historic site designated as Gyeonggi-do Monument, is the place where during the Mongol invasion of Korea, Buddhist monk-general Kim Yun-hu, along with the people of Cheoin bugok defended the fortress and killed the enemy commander Saritai, leading to victory in the battle. The Battle of Cheoin is regarded as the most grand victory in Goryeo history.
In order to spread the value and meaning of the battle, Yongin-si built the Education Center at 150-1 Agok-ri, Namsa-eup, which is the entrance to Cheoinseong. With a gross floor area of 999.64㎡, it has one basement floor and two floors above.
On the first floor, there is a room for permanent exhibits along with a room for activities, while on the second floor, a multi-purpose room is created.
The multi-purpose room, in particular, was created as an open space without any pillars, measuring 14m in width and 10m in height. It also shows the battle of Cheoin using holograms and realistic images.
In the activity room, many experience programs including building blocks for Cheoinseong and sketchings are being operated.
Yongin-si will temporarily open from 2 to 6pm for two weeks from the coming 29th, before the official opening on the 12th next month.
The opening ceremony, on the 28th, was attended by 30 people including Baek Kun-ki, the mayor of Yongin and Kim Kee-jun, the Youngin City Council chairman.
Mayor Baek said, "Cheoin bugok was promoted to Cheoin-hyeon because of the Cheoin battle. Later, Taejong combined Cheoin-hyeon and Yonggu-hyeon to create Yongin-hyeon". Additionally, he stated that "Yongin Cheoinseong Education Center will be used for the citizen in order to study the history."
