SEOUL, Nov. 17 (Yonhap) -- Renowned soprano Sumi Jo, who will be celebrating her 35th international debut anniversary this year, has been inducted into the Asian Hall of Fame for the first time as a South Korean.

Sumi Jo was selected as the first Korean singer to be inducted into this year's Asian Hall of Fame, which was broadcast online on Nov. 13 (local time), according to the singer's agency SMI Entertainment on Wednesday.

Founded in 2004 and based in Seattle, the Asian Hall of Fame honors Asian contributions to the world. Every year, leaders in various fields are selected and dedicated to the Hall of Fame to enhance Asian excellence, rights, and self esteem.

Hong Kong actor Bruce Lee, Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, journalist Connie Chung, and Korean-American actor Daniel Dae Kim have previously been inducted.

This year, 10 people were selected, including Jo, former CEO of PepsiCo. Indra Nooyi, Japanese-American pop music producer Steve Aoki, and Chinese-Jamaican bassist Phil Chen.

"I am happy to be recognized for my efforts over the past 35 years and as a musician representing Asia," Jo said. "I will work hard as a UNESCO peace artist and a leader representing Asia."
