S.Korean director Park Chan-wook to continue on with Hollywood production

SEOUL January 11 (Yonhap) -- South Korean film “Decision to leave” by director Park Chan-wook failed to received an award at the Golden Globe Award held on January 10 (US time) however director Park Chan-wook will continue to create movies for the Hollywood.

Director Park Chan-wook will try out for the “Critics Choice Awards” on January 15 (US time) with his block buster film “Decision to Leave.”

“Decision to Leave” was nominated to the “International Academy Award” happening in March 12. The final candidates for the award will be released on 24 however a lot of the critics expect director Park Chan-wook’s film to be included within the final 5 candidates of the awards.

Upcoming movie created by director Park is also an Hollywood movie, he is currently staying in Los Angeles due to the production of HBO’s “The Sympathizer.” This will be director’s second drama production after he released “Little Drummer Girl” through BBC in 2018.

Park Chan-wook’s “The Sympathizer” originates from the novel by the Vietnam American author Viet Thanh Nguyen by the same name. The novel depicts a story of a protagonist who lives a double life as a spy after his time through Vietnam war.

Through the interview conducted with the well known publication specializing in field of movies, during the red carpet event of “Golden Globe Awards” on January 10 (US time) Director Park Chan-wook stated “The upcoming production is based on the novel which received the Pulitzer Prize,” adding “It depicts a story of a group of refugees who leaves Vietnam after the war in 1975 to live a new life in Lost Angeles. Total of seven episodes will be included.”

Moreover, director addressed that “Multi racial actors were casted, including various Vietnam actors and actress, Korean Canadian actors and actresses, and famous holliwood actor Robert Downey Jr. will be part of the production.”

Actor Robert Downey Jr. known for his role as a super hero character Ironman will not only participate in the production as an actor but also he will work as a producer of the series.

Although, South Korean content failed to hold up the trophy, it was nominated as a candidate at the Golden Globe Award for the past four consecutive years, therefore overseas expansion of S.Korean film industry will be expedited.

The first South Korean to have received the trophy from the Golden Globe Award Bong Joon-ho’s collaborative SF movie “Mickey 17” produced with Warner brothers will premiere in March of 2023. The movie depicts a story of cloned human being concurring the unknown planet. The movie will feature actor Robert Pattinson from “Twilight” saga, and American Korean actor Steven Yeun, and Mark Ruffalo will appear throughout the movie.

South Korean director Yoon Jae-kyun will be collaborating with producer Linda Obst from the movie “Interstellar” which premiered in 2014 and produce the movie “K-pop : Lost in America,” and producer Yoo Chul-yong is currently undergoing the process of creating a Jamaican gangster movie with the writer of the hit Netflix series “Narcos.”

Actors and actress of South Korea are getting offers from Hollywood.

Lee Jung-jae who is known for his role in world well known Netflix series “Squid Game” is currently working on the upcoming Star Wars series “Acolyte” showcasing his fame as a world star.

Actress Jung Ho-yeon who rose to stardom after participating in the production of “Squid Game” addressed her casting of Alfonso Cuaron Orozco’s first series production by Apple TV+’s original series “Disclaimer” and director Joe Talbott’s upcoming movie “The Governesses.”

“The Marvels,” which is a sequel of the super hero movie “Captain Marvel” from 2018, where actor Park Seo-joon participated in the production of, will premiere on July of 2023.
