SEOUL, Dec.22 (Yonhap) -- K-pop supergroup BTS’ album “BTS, THE BEST” has ranked No.1 as an overseas group in the annual ranking of the local Oricon chart.

According to the annual ranking compiled by Oricon on Dec.22, the album sold 993,000 copies, ranking No.1 among all the albums on sales in Japan.

It is the first time in history for an overseas group to top the yearly album chart. This is also the first time in 37 years since American pop artist Michael Jackson's masterpiece "Thriller" was released in 1984.

"BTS, The Best" sold 782,000 copies in the first week, which is the highest record for foreign male artists to achieve.

The album covers BTS' single and album tracks released in Japan for four years since 2017.
