'Winter Gongju Roasted Chestnut Festival' to kick off on January 6 in Gonju City

SEOUL December 9 (Yonhap) -- One of the representing festival among central region of South Korea “Winter Gongju Roasted Chestnut Festival” will kick off on January 6 until January 8, at Art center Goma in Gonju city located in South Chungcheong province.

Based on Gonju City Government on Friday, “Winter Gongju Roasted Chestnut Festival” being hosted under the theme of “Sweet travel along with Gonju chestnut” will showcase number of participatory exhibition using local specialties.

Throughout the festival six of the rotary stirring stainless steel bowl frying machine with width of 2m will be available for visitors to try out the roasting process.

On top of roasting chestnuts, visitors will be able to freely grill up sausages, meat and more using ten of the grills throughout the festival, and exhibition where participants will learn how to make snacks using chestnuts.

"Winter Gongju Roasted Chestnut Festival" will also provide market place where visitors will be able to purchase the local grown goods at 10 to 20 percent discounted price.

Gonju city government will also provide educational exhibition showcasing streets often seen within the period of 1980s up until 1990s where it will bring back the good old memories to adults and learning experience to kids.

Moreover, the Gonju government has extended the duration of the festival to end at 8 p.m.

Mayor of Gonju City Government Choi won-cheol addressed “’Winter Gongju Roasted Chestnut Festival’ has managed to solidify its grounds as one of the representing festival of Gonju City,” adding “We will do our best to prepare for this event so that visitors will have unforgettable experience and to help out local farmers.”

Gonju City provides over 17 percent of total chestnuts being produced throughout the country which accumulates to over 6,530 ton of chestnuts yearly.
