SEOUL, Jan 5. (Yonhap) – James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” is still topping the South Korean box office, securing its place as the highest-grossing movie of the week.

The sequel to James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster “Avatar” ranked No.1 by registering 91 thousand admissions yesterday, according to data released from the Korean Film Council. The soon-to-be world’s No.1 global release of 2022 has accumulated 8.094 million moviegoers so far in South Korea.

Yet the daily admission number has gone below 100 thousand for the first time since its release date. The new releases in theaters, including “The First Slam Dunk" and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” are deemed to have had an impact on the slight decline by managing to scratch up some moviegoers.

“The First Slam Dunk,” a 2022 Japanese animated sports film based on the Slam Dunk manga series written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue, has gathered 62 thousand admissions on its release date, parking at No.2 at the box office.

With the all-time favorite manga brought to the big screen under the direction of Inoue, the movie is manifesting the power of anime by touching the hearts of those in their 30s and 40s, who used to be readers of the manga.

Joel Crawford’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” depicting the second solo adventure of Puss, sat at No.3 at the box office, garnering the attention of audiences who are looking for movies they can watch with their family or friends.

A South Korean comedy-drama film, “Switch,” telling the story of a top celebrity whose life switches with that of his manager, has also successfully entered the box office by parking at No.5.

A musical-drama film about the true story of An Jung-geun, “Hero,” remained in the chart as No.4, alongside the Japanese romantic film “Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight” sitting at No.6 and a South Korean period thriller drama film “The Night Owl,” managing to stay at the box office as No.7.
